Thousands of snow geese and tundra swans flock to Freezeout Lake around this time every year.
I have not ever been up to see the migration and have been looking forward to making the drive.
Today was our first of what I hope to be several trips up this season.
We first drove around and tried to catch the geese as they were flocking.
We kept being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but saw some neat things on our way.
I guess these guys are what make the geese flock when they fly overhead.
Finally I figured out that if we sit in one spot, the flocks will come to you.
The birds just kept coming in as the day progressed.
There were thousands of swans, too.
The sheer numbers and noise alone is enough to make you stand with your eyes to the sky in wonder.
It was a fun day, I want to go back..tomorrow!
Go visit, NOW if you haven't already. They don't stay long.

that first pic is sooo fun! and then the birds... way cool!
Looks wonderful... but our journey tomorrow will be south to K.Falls, not East to Montana, so keep taking pictures and blogging so I can enjoy it too. :-)
It was a beautiful day to be outdoors taking pictures. How many thousands of birds were there, I wonder? Did you see the moon on your way back?
how cool!! You live in such a neat place!
Stacy,
Thank you for the beautiful photos of a phenomenon that most of us would never get to experience in person.
Montana truly is a gorgeous place in many ways. Too bad it is so darn cold!
