Freezout Lake Trip #2

We made another trek up to Freezout Lake yesterday. Tony took us out in his flat bottom boat for a few hours so we could get up close and personal with the birds.  I know there are a lot of shots here but I just can't get enough of looking at this amazing mass of birds.

Headed out the slew toward the lake.
For quite awhile we sat and watched the birds come in from the fields up North where they were feeding.

We could see strings of birds coming in for miles and miles.
Words just can't describe the numbers, sounds, and sensations.

The swans were headed out, continuing their migration.

 More birds coming in.

They sort of circle in flocks before finding a spot to land.
I tried to capture the "wave."
When something spooks them, like an eagle, there is this group-think take-off that happens in a huge wave across the entire lake.

There are many other birds at the lake right now too.
We are looking forward to going back out when the ones that stick around are nesting.

Freezout Lake Trip #1

Thousands of snow geese and tundra swans flock to Freezeout Lake around this time every year.
I have not ever been up to see the migration and have been looking forward to making the drive.
Today was our first of what I hope to be several trips up this season.
We first drove around and tried to catch the geese as they were flocking.
We kept being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but saw some neat things on our way.
I guess these guys are what make the geese flock when they fly overhead.
Finally I figured out that if we sit in one spot, the flocks will come to you.
The birds just kept coming in as the day progressed.
There were thousands of swans, too.
The sheer numbers and noise alone is enough to make you stand with your eyes to the sky in wonder.
It was a fun day, I want to go back..tomorrow!
Go visit, NOW if you haven't already. They don't stay long.
