Hair Independence

Our girls have always had hair.
Avery didn't have as much, but her head has never been bald.
I had long hair when the kids were born but have never done much with it. Since then, I have learned to French braid, do pony tails tight, and even do "crown braids." Lately, I haven't had much motivation to do any of that, so I have been doing the top doo-dah and calling it good. The other day at violin, the mom whose daughter follows Avery was talking about how her eldest daughter still doesn't like to comb her own hair. I mentioned that I haven't "taught" the girls how to take care of their hair yet. My two girls were all ears. That night they both wanted to brush their own hair after the bath. They did a pretty good job, too! Since then, they have taken more responsibility for that sort of thing, not doing pony's or braids (I actually braided their hair today) but they are brushing a little bit more. This is their newest discovery....pulling pig tails tight. Their different personalities shine as they demonstrate their own techniques.

So...are you a 'nice' mommy when you brush their hair? You see, my girls act as if I am pulling every last wee hair from their delicate scalps. Interestingly enough, I CAN brush Athena's girls hair...with no tears...alas. It made sense that my mom always gave my sister & I the pixie cut...no tangles. :-)

Anne, Kyndra has such a tough head I can yank and yank. Avery, on the other hand, cries as soon as I touch the comb to her head. I was in first grade when my Mom chopped my hair off. I wonder how long I'll hold out :o)

but Stacy! #1 grandpa Dolderer wouldn't come from Connecticut to fix your hair every morning. #2 you got headaches from me pulling it too tight. #3 the Dorothy Hamel haircut was the 'in' cut!!!! The thing is, you didn't fuss 'that much' about having it brushed. I could lift you off the ground by your pigtails. No, it was mainly because of your headaches......and maybe because it was hard to stuff your thick hair into a swim cap? I didn't even keep your braids!! sorry

I have always looked at your girls' long curly hair and wondered what your mornings were like. Their beautiful hair has inspired me to grow Kyndra and Kylee's hair out... but not for long. We have never ventured past the shoulders. While Anne can freely brush my girls' hair, I do not do so with out a wailing fest... me included.

I was required by first grade to do my own hair for school. Mom wanted to do my hair for church...I said that if I had to do it during the week then I got to do it for church too! Maybe that is why I was 24+ before I let a hairdresser touch my hair!
Your girls' hair is beautiful and it is an honor to get to do their hair!

MT mom-that SAME quote was used on me....a thousand times..."but Dorothy Hamel is so cute." I finally put my foot down to the short hair when I was in 4th grade...I threw up on a carnival ride...and the Carnie yelled, "Stop the ride, some boy just threw up." You can see, clearly, why I was traumatized!

My sister would always pull my hair when fixing it. Probably why I have short hair as an adult.

What sweet girls you have!!
My frustration was that I would work so hard on French braiding Kirsten's hair (Lindsay pretty much always had short hair) and as soon as I was satisfied that it looked great she would be finding ONE hair out of place and pull out the braiding I had done...... I was ready to strangle her!
Girls!!!!!!!

Morgan and Sydney just let them fall out which makes them look like they have a mom who doesn't do their hair!
